Two modem setup |
|
|
My friend is doing medical transcription at home and is confined to dialup.
She uses a modern P4 computer running XP-Pro. Recently her office changed
systems, requiring her to download from the net, large audio files. Since
cable or DSL is not available, she is being advised to get a dual modem
setup with two internet accounts. Her ISP is advising her that this is
possible, however she is getting advice that it may not be practical or
reliable. Can anyone give us advice on that, and how to set up the computer?
For example is additional software required?

Thank you for the information. I may have misspoke she has been asked to get
a second dialup account (with the same ISP) for the second modem, which
makes some sense. Is it twice as fast???? Someone over on the medical
transcription newsgroup just advised that no, it wasn't- just that you could
download two files at onece......?

The intent of Multilink (aka Bonding) is for the 2 physical modem
links to function as 1 faster logical link. That is why the ISP
must specifically support this mode of connection, usually at some
extra cost within one account.
Merely making 2 simultaneous connections (teaming), with 2 logins
and 2 "accounts", (without Multilink in place) might allow 2 files
to be transfered at same time, but that is not what you want to
tranfer large files quickly.

XP has native support for multi-link PPP. No special software needed. |
Does the ISP offer the service? They have to, or she has to go to an
ISP that does. Based on what her ISP has said, they might. It will
not work with 2 different accounts on 2 ISPs. Obviously, 2 phone
lines and modems are required.
I have set up multi-link PPP in the past, and yes, it can be
approximately twice as fast, and it can be reliable. It doesn't
really come close to true broadband speeds. What are the size of the
files she needs to get?

Re: Two modem setup |

This type of setup is going to be a nightmare to setup, and won't
provide much added performance. Tell her to get satellite Internet if
nothing else. For the price (or a little pricer) of two dial-up
connections, she can get Mbps downstream speeds (albeit laggy), perfect
for downloading large files.
Or perhaps she can setup her computer to download the files at night,
for her to work on in the morning. If they're not already doing it, the
company should also compress the files using some audio codec -- I
assume they are for dictation, so a low bandwidth codec would be
optimal. |
