ip address through router (XP Pro) |
|
|
Hello,
I first posted on wrong message board, then it was taken
off by someone. (thank you to that person) Anyway, on to
the question and environment.
I have netmeeting 3.01 and my computer is connected to a
router (Linksys BEFW11S4) which in turn is connected to a
cable modem (Toshiba PCX2600). Ports
389,522,1503,1720,1731 and secondary ports (1204 - 65535)
have not been changed, meaning they are open to be used.
My friend has the same setup. We can not connect.
We are both on the same cable network, I would not think
that it would be that hard. We put in the ip address of
the outside ip address but still can not connect.
Can anyone help?
Thank you,
Craig |

Actually, these aren't 'boards', but 'newsgroups'. They serve a similar
purpose, but the underlying technology is quite different. Also, according
to the Super Gravity (Micro Planet Gravity 2.60) search, there are two
articles posted by somebody calling their self "Craig <info@cdg-us.com>".
Both made to "microsoft.public.win98.internet.netmeeting". Subject:
Netmeeting - IP address through router. Date: 5/22/2004. Times: 4:36 PM and
4:42 PM. Hmmm. I will subscribe, briefly, to pull the MID$s...

Ah, but you are not using a regular news client, but posting through the
Microsoft Internet site with their clumsy, and somewhat ineffective web-to-
NNTP server product:
X-Newsreader: Microsoft CDO for Windows 2000
Your posts were not pulled. They are there for anybody to find, who knows
how to manipulate the search functions; whether of a news client, or the CDO
interface itself. Look for the text entry field labeled "Search". Be sure
you are in the right group (see my comments above if you can't remember),
then enter "Netmeeting - IP address through router" in that search box. You
will find them, if you can do that much.

Can the Linksys be set with "trigger" events? Routers, by their nature, drop
unsolicited packets. You need to set the right ports for incoming calls
(which are unsolicited) as triggers, so the router will know to open the
proper ports for incoming connections when an unsolicited call is received.
I don't have a Linksys router installed at this time, so I can't tell you
how to accomplish that in detail.

It is hard because of the nature of NAT routers. You need to get some
'geeky' knowledge; possibly from your 'nerd' friends, if Google and reading
don't help. For most people, it is enough to turn the computer on and run
it; just like driving a car. But when you are trying to connect through
routers, you need to learn a bit about how TCP/IP works; just like learning
about how the motor works, when you want to build your own hot rod.
