can't reinitialize us robotics professional message modem |
|
|
hello,
Some years ago (exactly in May 1997) I got a US Robotics Professional
Message Modem. It was delivered with a 16-bit version of Winphone but
for some reason it never worked, I could never use it as a phone (only
for answering using the big button on the modem) and I could never fax
either, worse I don't know how I (or somebody else) activated the
answering machine and instead of a unique red light I have a plenty of
green and orange lights blinking, furthermore the answering machine is
activated after three rings while my ansering service (from my telecom
provider) is activated after four.
Now, I would like to use my modem as a simple fax machine (I have a
scanner and a DSL line so I don't really need it for internet), I tried
to download a new (trial) version of winphone (as I have no more the
floppy disk of the old win16 version provided with the modem),
unfortunately the program refuses to run saying that I have already
used my trial period.
I would like to know if there's a way (even if opening the beast is the
only way) to reinitialize it so that I can use it as a mere fax machine
(no answering machine and no phone calls), are there any utilities that
can do the job correctly ?. I am using both windows and linux (actually
I often user linux, I keep windows for my brother and for yahoo voice
chat as most of my friends live abroad and refuse to install linux or
even download skype, which is the only cross-platform VOIP software I
know)
thanx a lot, |

The model# is xx5625-0x?
I acquired one of these second-hand recently, to replace my Message Modem (5668)
that died. I revved up BVRP who supplied the original phoneTools software that
came with it, and they enabled a download of their latest version. You might
try that, or else get back to me here with a human-readable-but-munged addie and
I'll give you a libnk to a version that "should" work under Win98 at least. |

(snip)
You should be able to initialise it using AT commands and a terminal program.
If I can find my manual I'll look it up and post back here. |

Without knowing the model number or having a manual in hand, I would go read
the various modem settings from the HylaFAX modem configuration settings. I
wrote the SunOS port for SunOS of that software many moons ago, and people
devoted quite a lot of time to making the documentation and the
configuration settings for that quite usable. It's at www.hylafax.org, and
it's still an excellent reference for programming new modems. |
