sdk installation problem |
|
|
Mr Sullivan,
I downloaded the SDK from 'the wayback machine' but when I
try to install it I get 'A required resource was not found
error'. Should I have installed the IESDK or something
else before running it? The installer appears as a DOS,
rather than a windows .exe. I am looking to develop a
small corporate netmeeting-like capability. Is Netmeeting
worth pursuing or should I try something else such as a
customised windows/msn messenger.
Many thanks for your time,
Rob Martin |

Not sure what the issue might be -- what operating system is this on?

Again I am not sure - I had no problem downloading and installing from that
source on XP home

It depends on you mean by "netMeeting-like capablity",

NetMeeting is definitely in disrepair and being phased out -- I am not sure
though that Messenger is a suitable replacement ( or that there is any
replacement) -- it depends on what features you need and what you are trying
to do.

Thanks for such a prompt reply !
My platform is Windows Me. A further message suggested it
was a corrupt cabinet file so I suspect It did not
download properly. I have access to XP so I will try on
that.
I work for a company that employs geographically
dispersed (Europe mainly) financial consultants and they
have asked me whether it is possible to have a
messaging/conferencing facility so they can contact each
other and exchange files, text/voice/video chat.
Netmeeting seems to provide such functionality and I
really just want to customise the UI to include our logo
and if possible setup the program to automatically check
if various consultants are online and able to receive
calls. If this can be done to provide fairly secure calls
that would be preferable. Windows messenger seems to
support such presence detection but Netmeeting requires IP
addresses in advance, hence my dilemma.
Hope this clarifies,
Regards,
Rob Martin

Are you sure there is not a proxy or cache or something causing you a
problem -- as I indicated I have no problem.
Can you contact me offline via email?

Yes Messenger has presence detection but I am not sure it has the
customizing functionality you need. Both NetMeeting and Messenger have
problems with firewalls and NATs though so it might be prudent to see if
either will do the job before you start trying to customize.

Well in a way both need IP addresses in advance -- both have "presence"
servers( the ILS server or gatekeeper in NetMeetting's case) to indicate
presence and to supply the IP addresses required to initiate conversation.
NetMeeting can operate without the servers using direct IP addressing -
Messenger cannot.
http://www.meetingbywire.com/NetMeeting101.htm has a discussion of
NetMeeting call initiation strategies that may be useful.
