ath1 works atd does not |
|
|
I've got a sportster voice 33.6 faxmodem, external.
I picked it up at a flea market (so it could be junk...)
I can connect to it and query it ok. Things look alright.
It will go offhook with ath1, but will not with atd;
and any use of atd... after the ath1 will make it go
back on hook. No tones or pulses come out of the speaker
or appear on the line on an extension phone. No error message
appears.
I should say, the atd... will make it give a short
blurp from the speaker, like it goes offhook very briefly.
But no error message and no dialing.
If I have the extension phone offhook, the atdt1234 will get
me a short dialtone, but it goes quickly onhook with no
tones generated or anything.
If the extension is offhook without a dialtone (like during a call)
I get the "NO DIALTONE" error message.
.... it's like the dialtone detector is out to lunch or something.
I'm interested in prying it open to see what may be wrong, if
necesary.
Any ideas?

In the Usenet newsgroup comp.dcom.modems, in article

What O/S? What application? Which 33.6 Sportster Voice External?

What are you using for an init string? USR normally recommends using
AT&F1 - though most applications want to use something bizarre.
Try 'AT$' and 'AT&$' to see if the on-line help comes up. Look at
the ATIn (that is, atiN) commands, to see which (if any) gives "Current
Settings" and "NVRAM Settings". What do they look like?

"ATS$" may give the on-line help of the S registers.

How long the delay?

If you're able to get the "NO DIALTONE" message, this isn't likely
to be the case. You could try dialing with 'ATX0Dx12345467 (with x
being T for tone or P for pulse). The 'X0' tells it not to wait
for a dialtone, but to just get on with it.

Gee, that might void the warranty ;-)

Thanks Moe!
Well, I jumped ahead and did the screwdriver thing
which didn't get me anywhere.
As you probably know the quickest way to fixing
something usually involves running close to that fine
line beyond which all repair is hopeless.
I crossed the line. After a variety of offenses
to it's person, it will no longer power up.
I'm officially declaring it dead.
Chris
(I did get it to dial out a few times before the end... but
it would get into the tone negotiations and suddenly hangup...
and most of the time it wouldn't even get that far.) |
