NetMeeting suddenly doesn't work |
|
|
I use NetMeeting to access my office PC at least twice a week when I work
from home. I've had no problem until this morning.
I launched NetMeeting and tried to make a call to my office PC as usual but
received the message "The person cannot accept NetMeeting calls." I tried
once or twice again with the same results. I tried again but the splash
screen flashed momentarily, closed, and there was no app.
I rebooted but experience the same problem. I've tried starting NetMeeting
from my shortcut, from the Run menu and by double-clicking conf.exe in my
Program Files folder.
I'm running XP Pro and a month or so ago had a fresh install on a new HD. No
problems whatsoever till today.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance,
Gaye |

I am not totally sure I understand what you are seeing from your symptoms.
Can you call other parties?
The problem (at least the problem of not being able to reach your office
computer) is more likely at the other end. I am not sure if there is some
sort of local problem as well.
How is the office end setup? How do you make the call? I presume using the
IP address? Are you sure the IP address is correct? Is there some sort of
router at the other end? How do you penetrate the router? Could its setup
have changed? Are you sure the computer you are trying to reach is on an
capable of receiving a call? |

Re: NetMeeting suddenly doesn't work |

The immediate problem is that I can no longer launch NetMeeting. The splash
screen flashes momentarily, then disappears. No NetMeeting.
I read netmeet.htm but don't see anything in it about what to do if the app
quits launching. I considered uninstalling and reinstalling but it doesn't
show up in Control Panel's Add/Remove Programs applet. So I don't even know
how to get rid of the app.
The weirdest thing is that it DID launch earlier today (as it has been
doing, faithfully) but for some reason, after it couldn't connect to my
office PC, it seems to have just gone bye-bye.
Ever heard of a similar case of the Disappearing NetMeeting?

On XP NetMeeting is part of the protected operating system and cannot be
removed, renamed.

I haven't heard of anything similar and I am not sure what could have caused
this. Have you installed something on the system or changed it recently?
I would suggest that you use the system restore feature to restore your
system to a point in time where NetMeeting worked and retry.

Re: NetMeeting suddenly doesn't work |

Thanks for the System Restore tip. I've never used it before, maybe this'll
be a good opportunity to see if it's a good feature. ;~)
To answer your question, no, I haven't really installed anything new
lately--I put in a new HD a month or so ago and had to reinstall everything
from the OS up, but nothing in the last week or more. And NetMeeting was
working as recently as this weekend. In fact, it was working earlier this
morning--it launched okay but just couldn't connect to my office PC.
However, I don't think that problem was related--I think it was due to my
having rebooted my office PC yesterday and perhaps failing to reset the
automatic desktop sharing feature before going home.
In any event, I had to come in to work today so I won't be able to try your
suggestion till tonight. Fingers crossed...and you can be sure I'll letcha
know.
Thx again,
Gaye

Brian, thank you for the reminder about System Restore. I've been using XP
Pro for two years now and have never used this feature.
Following your suggestion, I restored to a week ago when NetMeeting was
working and voila, NetMeeting is working again.
Thank you so much!
