Netmeeting connection problems |
|
|
Hello,
I have been using netmeeting to connect with my personal
pc and my pc at the school that work at. I have been
using the remote desktop regularly, however, I have
recently been having troubles with password validation.
Several times I have uninstalled and reinstalled the
Netmeeting software as well as deleted the registry entry
for the password as the knowledge base article suggested.
Does anyone have any other suggestions to correct the
problem.
I use NM 3.01 and I have Windows 98 (on both machines.
Thanks for your help.

What problem are you having?

I have heard sporadic reports of situations in the past ( on Win9x systems)
where the name and password known to be correct seem no longer valid. Is
that what you are seeing?
I have never actually seen this problem and afaik there is no solution other
than what you are doing. Unless someone is actually changing the credentials
or the registry is somehow corrupted I can't think of a reason for the
phenomenon.
I have never heard of this problem on XP or 2000 (they use standard
authentication strategies) so your only option may be to upgrade.

I am asked for the password several times which never is |
validated. Then I get the error message of "You must
enter a password to join this meeting." or something to
the effect of "This machine does not accept Netmeeting
calls." The later, I know is not true since I have double
checked the IP address and when I arrived back home I
checked to see if the remote desktop software was active
and every time it has been active.

I have noticed this events especially after I defragment
my hard drive, the machine freezes, and a few times after
I scan for viruses. However, it happens most often after
defragmentation.

The article I read sugguested a newer release of NM,
version 4.*. I have only found 3.*. Am I not looking in
the right place?

Since I can't upgrade the software at the school were I |
work, is there any freeware software out there that I
could possibly replace the NM software on my personal PC
so I could continue connecting to my personal machine? If
I were to upgrade the OS it would break my bank currently
since I would also need to update the processor. Many of
the OS other software packages that I have read about make
it difficult for a machine with only 32 megs of ram
(Emachine 366si).
Thanks for your help.
