It seems that Microsoft discontinued the development for Netmeeting, right?
Will there any new version for this software?

Yes -- there hasn't been any development ( or development group) for more
than 4 years.

Not unless MS does a complete about face -- very unlikely IMHO.

Brian.
Do you think there will "some product" that uses H.120 and / or H.323
protocols regardless of the packaging ?

My gut tells me "yes" for some reason. Or is there some other low level
technology or standards that you think could easily supercede what we have
today in netmeeting ?

I welcome you opinion.

I suspect not -- Microsoft has concentrated its p2p audio/video calling
development on SIP based technologies ( Msn/Windows Messenger, Live
Communications Server). All H.323 related functionality has been or is being
purged it seems (there is no H.323 MCU available for Exchange 2003 for
instance).

For data collaboration Microsoft is pushing Live Meeting ( the rebadged
Placeware stuff) -- it is based on proprietary protocols ( in fact it seemed
that when asked they were not even aware of T.120 -- at least not at the
periphery of the division).

What leads you to think that T.120 and H.323 products are likely to be part
of the future? Anything is a possbility I suppose -- there may well be more
information out there that I am not aware of.

Reasons why H.120 / H.323 could carry forward:
Installed base exists
Installed base works pretty good
Open source products / existing technical expertise / existing code base
Commodity priced products
MS will charge for some replacement products
If products get too complex people will ignore them (if they can)

Or to ask it another way: do you think desktop collaboration will be merged
into a larger trend and product space involving mail, IM, screen sharing,
VOIP, video phone, conferencing, etc., as one big bundle of products and
services ?

Because honestly, I work with a lot of really smart people, and often, just
the data conferencing peice requires a little hand holding.

All may be valid reasons but Microsoft it seems does not think so and is
ignoring them.

Possibly - certainly Messenger/IM and Office appear to heading to
integration with Live Meeting. It is just this kind of integration that lead
to the last DOJ/Antitrust problems though so I am thinking Microsoft should
tread carefully.

I suspect the problem here is more just the nature of the internet itself.
Many of the problems are much more manageable if all parties on the same
LAN. My oft repeated mantra:

"The internet is a very hostile place for real time audio/video calling" ,
can also be extended to real time data collaboration I think.
