Hi,

I have a problem with my new 3025c modem. I have just installed it and
tried to use it with my voice mail software (IVM).

The problem is that when the modem goes into answer mode and AT+VLS=1
is sent to the modem. The following error (see >>>>> below) is returned
by the modem - actually the same that you originally reported on the
newsgroup.

My machine is a P4, WinXP (SP2).
The modem is installed with the latest drivers - confirmed by Zoom tech
support.

According the various newsgroups and voicemail sites, the 3025C has
been reported by users as working ok with voice answer.

I have tried the following:
. contacted Zoom - pretty useless and don't want to know
. exchanged the modem to rule out any hardware issues - no difference
. tried other voice mail software (Callstation) - same problem
. tried on a W2K machine (SP4) - same problem

Does anyone have any further ideas?

Dave,

the only valid conclusion is that the inf file does not match the
modems AT command set. Can you get a list of supported
AT commands from the manufacturer (or maybe it's included
in the manual or on the CD)?

Then you could compare the inf file commands and responses
to the AT commands and perhaps modify some of the commands.

Best regards,

The INF file is the one supplied with the modem.

If I use hyperterminal to check what options are supported by AT+VLS
(i.e. AT+VLS?) then the response includes the options 0,1,5.

This seems to be some obsure problem.

Dave,

Quote:

unfortunately that doesn't mean anything. There are
often errors in inf files.

Please try to get a reference of all AT commands and
their parameters and check _all_ commands, not only
the AT+VLS, maybe the error occurs earlier.
For example at+vsm=130,8000,0,0 seems a bit uncommon,
but you really need to check the AT command reference
to be sure.

Perhaps the software sets a 6 sec timer (+VIT=6), takes the modem off

speaking. If you disable the timer (+VIT=0), do you still get an ERROR
for +VTS=1?

On second thoughts, I think the VIT setting may be a timeout for voice
data. Perhaps the modem waits for up to 6 secs for the application
software to provide the voice data that it replays to the caller.
Maybe the software doesn't start sending this data because it is
waiting for a response from the modem indicating that it has
successfully connected to the output device, ie device #1, the phone
line. My modem responds to AT#VLS=1 with "VCON". The Win98 registry
interprets this response in the same way as an "OK". Do you have a
"VCON" in the Responses section of your modem's INF file? If you type
the same commands in a HyperTerminal session, does the modem respond
with VCON? Do you have a phone connected to the Phone socket on your
modem? If so, do you still have this problem if you disconnect it?

Hi Franc,

You are correct, the VIT (Voice Inactivity Timer) is the timeout for no
activity on the modem line (voice data in my case).

I'll check to see if VCON is in the response section tonight when I get
home.

I have a phone connected to the phone socket, however, I've tried
unplugging it and I've even tried connecting the incoming phone line to
the 'phone out' socket at the back of the card, but all to no avail.

Funny that, Zoom tech support have a get out clause for this, they say
that these are generic manuals.

"...The Reference manual is generic and not all commands that are in

Conexant for more help on the issue..."

However - have you ever tried to contact conexant? They just pass you
back to the modem manufacturer!

Based on the +VLS=? response of my modem, the zoom sourced manual does
not exactly match, I have however found this other manual (different

which more matches the +VLS response from my modem (see below):

Quote:
Perhaps the software sets a 6 sec timer (+VIT=6), takes the modem off
hook (+VLS=1), and then complains because the caller hasn't started
speaking. If you disable the timer (+VIT=0), do you still get an ERROR
for +VTS=1?

I have now attached 2 modem log files:
The first is the full log of the modem that I am having problems with,
with the VIT set to 0 as you suggested (no timeout). However, it still
seems to timeout after 6 seconds as before, with the VLS=1 returning
the error.

The second log file is another modem that I have been using previously
(no caller id support however, so I wish to replace it with the new
zoom modem when I get it working...)

09-02-2005 14:12:57.064 - Hanging up the modem.

I confess that my knowledge of voice modems is practically nil, but I
did some testing that may shed some light on this problem.

My understanding is that the modem's DSP (whether hard or soft) can
communicate with a variety of devices including the phone line, an
attached handset, an external microphone, or an external speaker. The
particular IO device is selected by the +VLS command (#VLS in my
case), the default being the phone line.

The documentation for +VLS=1 states the following:

"Modem off-hook and connected to the line. Local phone provided with
power to detect hook condition."

The second sentence assumes that the modem contains hardware to detect
current in the attached handset. IME such hardware is usually absent.
In fact my own 56K "hard" Rockwelloid does not even have a PHONE
socket, only a LINE. My 33.6K modem has an unpopulated IC location
that is reserved for the missing hardware, probably an LM317 regulator
wired as a 20mA current source. A full featured voice modem is a rare
animal, IME. Among other things, such a modem would require
independent relays for the LINE and PHONE sockets. My 33.6K "voice"
modem just wires the two sockets directly together and links out the
optional relay(s). I expect the reason for detecting the status of the
attached handset is so that the answering machine software can
relinquish control of the call to the operator.

Anyway, here is how my 56K modem responds to various commands when
sent via HyperTerminal.

After sending AT#CLS=8, the modem responds with OK then <DLE>h. This
code means "Line Current Break (local phone goes on-hook)". As the
modem does not have a socket for a parallel phone, this response is
meaningless. Furthermore, taking any other phone in the house off-hook
does not produce additional <DLE> codes.

After sending #VLS=1, the modem responds with "VCON". However there is
no dialtone. Measurements at the wall socket (~53VDC) indicate that
the modem is still on-hook, ie it has not connected to device #1. An
ATH1 command responds with OK but does not take the modem off-hook.
ATH "hangs up" phone and returns to data mode (#CLS=0). A second ATH1
then works as expected and produces a dialtone.

I suggest you perform similar tests in HyperTerminal while measuring
the voltage at the wall socket. Do your other house phones stop
ringing when your modem executes +VLS=1?

Here is a sample of DLE codes:

h Line Current Break (local phone goes on-hook)
H Line Current Detected (local phone goes off-hook)
R Ring
d DIALTONE
u Transmit Buffer Underrun

Hi Franc,

I don't think it's a problem with my line/connection/modem hardware.

When an AT+VLS=1 is issued, the modem does actually go off hook (the
line is connected). All phones in my house stop ringing.

However, as you can see from the modem log, the +VLS=1 does not return
until 6 seconds later, with an ERROR.

The +VIT (Voice Inactivity Timeout so happens to be set to 6 seconds,
and if altered does NOT affect the 6 second timeout of the +VLS
command).

I can only think that I have an obscure problem with the combination of
WinXP/TAPI version that I am running with (5.1.2600 on WinXP and
5.0.2195 on Win2K that I have also tried), the soundcard (onboard
Realtek AC'97 on my WinXP, VIA Realtek AC'97 on my Win2K) that I have
and/or the modem.

According to other people, they have successfully had the same modem
working with Win98, Win2K, WinXP.

I think the only course of action open to me now is:
1) Give up!!!
2) Try on Win98 (although my actual machine that would normally run
my software is a Win2K machine) - I have a decomissioned Win98 machine
that has a Soundblaster 64 card in it
3) Rebuild a Win2K, WinXP machine and try that (someone has reported
this before and claimed that the re-install of his Win2K sorted it out,
but then after installing SQLServer the same problem came back - so
another re-install again sorted it out - crap eh?)
4) Try a 'off-board' PCI soundcard to rule out any problems with the
onboard cards

Any more ideas would be welcome...

I would really like to stick with the modem, since it has good press
and I have proved that it does actually support UK caller id. The only
problem with it is the reported slow DTMF response (though I have not
got that far to see if it is correct).

Anyway thanks for sticking with this and giving me some good feedback.

Dave,

as I stated earlier there may be an error in the inf file.

Did you use an inf file provided by the manufacturer or
by Windows? Are there different inf files available for
your modem?

You may try to modify an inf file to create your own:
Copy the inf file, open it, edit the modem name (e.g.
an X to the end of the name, to be able to distinguish)

Then you can try to experiment with different values for
AT+VSM. I would try 1,128 and 129.
I don't think that any of the other values can
be wrong: fclass=8: select voice mode, vtd: DTMF tone
duration, vit: voice inactivity timer, vls=1 go off-hook,
audio source/destination from/to line.

You may also want to try this scenario by hand with
Hyperterminal.

I don't think that a change of computer/soundcard would
help. Also, in this case I don't think that the interface with the
modem could be a problem, because no data is supposed to
be transfered at this time.

Hi Matthias,

I don't think there is a problem with my INF file. I have used the one
that came with the

modem and have altered it to fix a problem recogising UK BT caller ids.

Other people have had the same modem working under Win2K and WinXP, I
have even sourced and

tried the modem driver (including INF file) from someone that has had
it working. The INF

file was exactly the same as the one I am using. The driver was
slightly older, but this did

not work either - I encountered the exact same problem.

I have tried all valid options for +VSM:
1,8000,0,0
128,8000,0,0
129,8000,0,0
130,8000,0,0
131,8000,0,0
132,8000,0,0
133,8000,0,0
All gave the exact same error.

As you suggested, I then used hyperterminal to try out the command
sequence on voice answer as defined in the INF file:
at+fclass=8
at+vtd=10
at+vsm=130,8000,0,0
at+vit=0
at+vls=1

I opened hyperterminal, and created a new connection using the zoom
modem.
After entering all the above commands (up until at+vit), all returned
'OK' as expected.
Then after entering at+vls=1, the line was connected and 'OK' was
returned. This was the point that I normally discovered that 'ERROR'
was being returned.

So what could the problem be? as using hyperterminal seemed to work
fine.

Dave,

this seems to be a very weird problem. The modem log
file at this point is not of any help here. But it is good that
you can get it to work with HyperTerminal.

Now we should find out the difference between the HyperTerminal
sesstion and the Unimodem TSP. For this you should obtain
a serial or USB port monitor (there are several available, you
can try http://www.hhdsoftware.com).
Reproduce the session with HyperTeminal and with Unimodem.
Then compare the traces to find the differences.

So what could the problem be? as using hyperterminal seemed to work
fine.

Hi Matthias,

That sounds like a plan!

Thanks again.
