Netmeeting in Windows 2000/XP |
|
|
I am rolling out a Netmeeting support scenario to a large
number of remote clients, Win98 W2K and WinXP. I have
successfully created an installation application for Win98
using the Netmeeting Administration Kit. However, you
cannot install a version of Netmeeting into W2k or WinXP.
Does anyone have information regarding the usage of the
Automatic Configuration setting within Netmeeting (found
in Windows Management Console)? What type of file do I
need to set to download to automatically configure my
clients? I have tried the nm3conf.inf created with the
Win98 deployment, but it does not work.
Any suggestions? |

The management of NM on Win2000/XP is done via group policy.

right. but because these remote locations are low speed
PPP, they are not members of the Domain structure. Can I
still use the Group Policy Agent? I have tried walking
down that route as far as creating the ntconfig.pol with
the settings that I want, but they are not logging onto a
domain so I will have to touch each machine individually.
I'd like to simplify this process for the individuals
configuring these machines. Can I simply import this
ntconfig.pol without having Policy editor on the machine?
Or rather, can I export the settings I have set in the
Management Console to easily import into the remote
machines?
There is a setting to configure the automatic
configuration of Netmeeting and it works for Win98 setting
it to download the nm3conf.ini but can't get it configured
to work in 2000.

The group policy editor is available on Win XP Pro ( not Home). Are you
configuring machines before they are deployed or are these machines already
in the field?

I really don't know -- if the users are to do the configuration themselves
they would need administrator access.

AFAIK it should be similar on Win2000/XP -- there is a policy setting for
specifying the url of the configuration file. I have never actually used it
so I don't know whether it works as it should.

Already in the field, that's why I wanted to try and use
the automatic configuration setting.
