Does anyone know how to get NetMeeting to send and receive
Japanese characters on English PCs?

Even after changing the character settings, it was still
displaying boxes in place of the characters.

I presume you have the Microsoft Japanese character set installed on English
Windows. Here are a couple things you can try.

1. Within NetMeeting's chat window, set your font to "MS Gothic" That is
the only font that worked for me when I tried a similar setup (but not with
NetMeeting).
2. If you can successfully write in Japanese in MS-Word or in Outlook
Express, try writing there first then pasting into NetMeeting. (Again, be
sure to use MS Gothic in all apps.) It's not very convenient, but it's
easier than the next suggestions.
3. Try one of the third-party utilities that adds Japanese capability to
English systems. I think there used to be one called "Kanji Word" (no
relation to Microsoft). Those may put Japanese characters deeper into your
system than Microsoft's character sets do and therefore work in more
applications. But I'm not sure.
4. Install Japanese Windows either as your main system or as part of a dual
system. You probably thought of that already because it is the surest
solution.
5. If you and your partners are using XP, try Windows Messenger instead of
NetMeeting. It might be more receptive to foreign languages because it is
more modern.

Using Japanese in an English system is a very tough problem. At my
workplace the pros struggled with it for a long time and although they found
a fairly good solution (using the Microsoft fonts), it still isn't perfect
and doesn't work well outside of MS-Word , Outlook, and IE.

Keep trying everything, and good luck!
