NM Process Running But No Window |
|
|
I have a brand new PC running XP Professional and I want
to NM into my computer at work via our VPN. When I start
Netmeeting up by either double-clicking on the NM icon in
the \Program Files\Netmeeting folder or by doing a Run...
and typing in "conf", the NM process starts (I can see the
process in the Processes list in Task Manager) but the NM
application interface doesn't appear on my desktop.
I am behind both software and hardware firewalls in my
home office and I do run my company's VPN client software,
but I wouldn't imagine this has anything to do with the
problem as I can't even start up the NM application.
Thanks. |

Is the NetMeeting process (conf.exe?) running before you try to start it
from the conf.exe or start->run->conf.exe?
Is it listed in the application tab

I didn't check this the first time I tried to start it
up. However, after I encountered problems, I went into
Task Manager and killed all of the NM processes (there
were a couple from my trying and failing to start it up).
I then tried to restart NM and got the result I described
previously - the NM application window wouldn't appear.
Thanks.

So you start(after a reboot preferably) with no conf.exe processes, you try
to start and end up with one conf.exe in the process list and nothing in the
programs list? What about the services list -- is the NetMeeting Remote
Desktop Sharing service there -- in what state?
This is a brand new XP machine? What kind of hardware -- sound?
camera/capture device?
What are you logged in as ( an adminstrator?)

Hmmm... Yes, a brand new machine I had built for me at PC
Club. Nothing too fancy, ASUS motherboard with sound and
NIC on the board. No camera stuff.
I'm logged in on a normal user account, not as the machine
administrator.
I'm not familiar with the Services list. How do I view it
and what should I see there? Thx.

Try the adminstrator account. Try disabling the sound card ( temporarily to
see if makes a difference).

It can be accessed from the "Administrative Tools" control panel applet( you
have to this as an administrator).
There could be a "NetMeeting Remote Desktop Sharing" Service (I'm not
totally sure if it is always there). Regardless if it is there it probably
should *not* be running.

This sounds just like the problem I'm having too! I did
try the administrator account, but it didn't help. I will
try disabling the sound card next time I get out to her
house. I'm very interested in solving this problem.
Thanks,
Pat
