My new modem ADDON V92 will not connect faster than 28.8. Disconnected all
other phones etc. Any other PC on the same line runs at 48k. Tried all (my)
known settings, is there something I have missed. Tried this modem in
another PC, once it ran at 36k, then no more than 28k. Is it faulty?

I have installed, uninstalled tried this and that but always back to 28.8k.

PC Pent3 850, 128 ram. Win ME.

I have just borrowed a Lucent modem; it did not even ask for a driver and
installed from generic ME source, and runs at 46.6 !! Should I look for a
Hard or Soft version. what is their advantages, etc ? Comments appreciated.

Regards Vic

You've certainly shown that your phone line and ISP are capable of

v.90. Some possibilities:

- The modem is using the wrong driver or setup string.
- The modem is defective.
- The modem can't adjust for the ISP's modem and your line conditions
as well as other modems can - this is a likely explanation if the
first 2 possibilities aren't the cause.

Thanks Gary
Will look into this again. Do you have any thoughts on the merits or
otherwise of Hard/Soft modems?

Navas' discussion is rather old, but of some value:

http://home.att.net/~modemfaq/faq_c.htm#SoftwareModems

The 56K site is more current:

http://www.56k.com/reports/winmodem.shtml

I've used both types with success. The keys for a softmodem is to
have the resources available (proper spec machine and not running
resource intensive apps) and the proper drivers installed. Given a
choice, I will always choose a hardware based modem.
