Hi,

I want to be able to have a netmeeting with parents.
They have a std dial up account internet connection and I have an ISDN
connection.

How do I make the call so that they can see and hear me?
What address do I need to use?

Thanks

Unless your ISDN connection is via a NAT you should be able to call them via
their IP address and have two way audio/video.

They can determine their current IP address by using help about in
NetMeeting, communicating it to you via whatever means you have at your
disposal ( email, instant messenger). You could also use many instant
messengers directly to initiate the call.

Brian - will the cam speed be better than MSN Messenger ? on DSL we
get very slow speed....

The limitation is not likely the program but the bandwidth constriction --
their end has a nominal maximum 33.6 k baud incoming speed (whether that is
the constriction causing the problem I don't know -- there could be isp
related constrictions as well. Even with the smallest capture/display size
video is likely to be marginal even assuming maximum bandwidth and totally
optimum lighting and audio conditions.

ok. But even if we are both on DSL ?

Well there are still constrictions in bandwidth -- in adsl remember the
speeds are asymetric ( hence the a of asdl) -- so one constriction is still
the outgoing bandwidth at the source.

Every router along the way if it is busy can drop or slow packets as well so
how much bandwidth is available internal to the the ISPs network and on the
path to peering can be constriction. From what I have seen the only time
local hardware or throttling of audio/video (I think default throttling
limit for all O/S's is 80k bytes per second) becomes an issue is when both
parties on the same lan.

Thanks a lot for that Brian - I understand what you're saying - it's
just disappointing that DSL cannot give a decent video link in a tiny
window... (no audio)... after waiting for it soooo long :)
