Neil and others,

Today I finally purchased microphone with stand for just 9.95 besides tax.
I could hear from only one hearing person. It is a sign of progress! But he
cannot hear me. Nevertheless, no video relays can hear me. So neither do
I. I am afraid that since they (relays) use their own video programs, it
creates incompatibility between our audio/sound/voice drivers. They dont use
NetMeeting.

All the settings in Sound and Aduio drivers in Control Panel are configured
to set max sound volume. There seem to be two separate configurations: one
for voice and another for playback on the following screen. Nevertheless
they both are set to soundMAX digital audio (Standard Dell audio drivers)
from Logitech 4000. I am using Logitech camera 4000, but use Dell audio
drivers this time. Because Logitech video camera built in microphone seems
not working. Also they are set to not muted.
Then when I started Netmeeting, it was aware of the new configurations. I
went through Audio Wizard test, I could see the green-red horizonal bar
zooming up and down when I speak into microphone.. And also I could hear my
voice coming out from speakers...I am assuming it is called Playback.
It shows that microphone and speakers are working properly.
I notice at the back of the audio card. there are three holes..one for mic,
another for down arrow speakers and another for up arrow speakers. I could
not remember which speakers hole I plugged in, but once it worked, I assume
it is the right hole. Anywway, I would like to know what the other hole is.

I guess it is possible your microphone is not set to 'record' sounds -
the way to find oout is to click on the volume control on your PC (or
go to Start->Programs->Entertainment->Volume control) and then select
Options->Properties

Usually people only see the tabs for playback, but by doing this you
can see a selection to 'Adjust volume for Playback / Recording'

If you then select recording, you see different sliders, which allow
you to set the volume level of sounds captured by your microphone.
Also on this tab, you can see if the Microphone is 'Muted' or not,
that is, it wil pick up no sounds even when switched on.

Make sure the volume level of the microphone is max initially, and
that the microphone control is not in 'mute' mode. If you then run the
sounds wizard on netmeeting, you should see the green bar rise & fall
when you speak, which indicates netmeeting is receiving sound input.

BTW - you mentioned you were partly deaf, this server might be of
interest : ils.csdvrs.com .... go to Call-> Directory and punch this
into the dropdown box at the top - it will connect you to the video
relay service ILS server, which is a deaf specific group, perhaps some
people there might have some helpful advice for setting up netmeeting.

You will probably need to go to netmeeting->options too, and check
'log on to directory server' which will list your name on the server -
otherwise, you will not be listed and peopl emight wonder wherre your
call came in from ;-0

Cheers - Neil.

In this posting, I said I need to tell you that I am deaf.
I was not able to hear the sounds, but with the aid of hearing aid, I was
able to hear sounds only. (I am not able to distinct the sounds. The
hearing
people on the other end during Internet NetMeeting said they could not
hear
me and also so did I.
I know that the sounds did emit (not Beeps) during Audio Wizard tests. I
was
able to hear these undulating "drum" sounds described by you. You
describe
them better.

If you hear your own voice from your mic, then your audio is misconfigured.
Double click the audio icon in the sys tray and select Options/Properties
and make sure that the Microphone is NOT selected in the Playback mode and
IS selected in the Record mode.

Joel,

I see, but I dont hear my own voice from mic. So everything works fine! I
think everything is fine now as long as the person on other end uses
NetMeeting like mine. In this case, it works with no incompatibility. Mic
and speakers work well. I notice when others using different video programs
other than NetMeeting with me complicates it further. But basically my mic
and speakers work fine. I may gain experience later in audio configurations
with others who use different video software.

Thank you, Brian, Neil, Pappy for getting me started.

Neil,

Thanks for the reply and also info about ils.csdvrs.com .

I have used their Video Relay service often, but I am not aware of its ils
status. I will try check it there later.

I am just letting you, Brian and others know that it is not possible/legal
to ask Video Relay Services to do audio test with me, because their
communications policy is restricted to VIDEO in American Sign Language. They
only communicate with the deaf in Sign Language through video and then relay
to the hearing callers via VOICE. I thought it may be of interest to you.
At this writing, I began to wonder how hearing people reach Video Relay
Services to relay messages to deaf people. Common sense would say that they
just make voice calls to the Video Relay. But the deaf when make calls to
the Video Relay have to get online via Internet. Probably hearings can make
phone calls via Internet. Do they or is it already a reality? Hope not I am
confusing you further.

Again, thank you all for the time giving me info on audio configurations.
