sometimes can't connect via remote desktop sharing |
|
|
I've set up an office computer with remote desktop sharing on.
All client computers can connect to it without problems except for one.
Here are the details on the problem client computer:
The computer will connect to the host computer sometimes. After a successful
connection, if you quit and try to get back in, then NM give msg, "other
party did not allow..." (We know that no one else is currently connected to
the host. ) Sometimes when the client computer is rebooted, we can connect.
But not every time we reboot do we have success. EVERY TIME the problem
client has a problem connecting and we try a different client, it connects
to host immediately.
The 4-5 times we had client connect to DIFFERENT host with remote desktop
sharing, it worked EVERY TIME.
1)XP HOME
2) MacAfee firewall is on, but even if we turn it off we still have problems
connecting to host computer
3) I've given NM permission to go thru the firewall via MacAfee interface.
I've opened ports 1720 and 3398 on MacAfee.
4) ISP = Zoomtown out of cincinnati.

This is the target machine or the client having the problem?
NetMeeting uses tcp 1503 for RDS( and all data) access. tcp 3398 is not used
( at least not by NetMeeting -- the XP Remote Assistance function uses that
port I think). tcp 1720 is used for audio/video call establishment and
should not be needed in this situation.
I don't have any idea what would cause your symptoms though.

Thanks for the info.
The one specific client is the only one having the problem, all other
clients can connect to the host machine every time.
Just very strange that it will connect to host sometimes, but not others.
Extra strange that it will connect to a different host computer every time.
Anyone have any experience like this? Would uninstalling and reinstalling
netmeeting on XP help? I know that it is really part of the OS now and I
guess may not uninstall completely. I'll likely try to uninstall/reinstall
per KB 267958. I am out of town so won't be able to test this for a few
days.

What about the relative network location of all the parties?

I don't think it will make any difference but it can't really hurt ( it just
reinitializes the registry entries to unconfigured state).
It sounds like some sort of network or firewall based problem. Sometimes
software firewalls still get in the way even if "disabled" -- the only thing
that gets them out of the picture is total deinstallation. But nothing you
have said points specifically to a problem with your software firewall.

All hosts and clients are over TCP/IP. Nobody is in the same building. My
gut is the firewall is the issue. We'll look again when I am back in town.
Thanks again for the info.
