In an effort to achieve better phone like audio quality, and conference call
ability, a friend suggested I download and install a free product call Skype
http://ui.skype.com/help_bugreport_thankyou.html

Skype actually provides significantly better audio quality for voice calls
than does Windows Messenger or NetMeeting. However, it does not allow for
conference calling, and it disables the audio in NetMeeting. So I
uninstalled it. Unfortunately, I still can't get audio or even a NetMeeting
session started for that matter. So I want to re-install NetMeeting to
restore the Microsoft versions of what ever drivers Skype replaced with its
own drivers (that remain even after the I uninstalled Skype). But my
attempts to re-install netmeeting fail because NetMeeting is already
"installed" in Windows XP and Microsoft will not allow me to download and
re-install it.

I am not sure what Skype could have done -- are you saying the audio wizard
does not run in NetMeeting?

No downloadable NM will install and run on XP.

A form of de/reinstallation can be done by using the procedure at:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q267958

(it just reinitializes the NetMeeting registry entries to virgin state).

Ans: No, the audio wizard runs fine. Its just that when someone attempts
to initiate a NetMeeting session with me, Skype, and not NetMeeting
itercepts the "call." I get great audio, but no NetMeeting.

Ans: Thank you Brian, but the above technique appears to be for a NetMeeting
running under Windows 2000, and I'm running NetMeeting (conf.exe) under
Windows XP Pro. Put differently, I searched my entire C: disk for
"Msnetmtg.inf" without success. So, I could not even perform the first step
of the workaround spelled out in Q267958.

Did you examine the Internet Options settings for "Internet Call" -- what
does it say?

This works for XP as well as 2000. Did you search for "hidden or system"
files. I believe that is necessary as either the inf directory or the file
or both are "Hidden'.

Hi Brian,
Currently, Internet Call specified "NetMeeting".

I was able to locate msnetmtg.inf when I searched for hidden files. I will
perform the work-around specified in Q267958 and post an update.

Hi Peter

I had the same problem.

IIRC you had to go to File Type, URL Call To Protocol then add back the

rundll32.exe msconf.dll,CallToProtocolHandler %l

line.

I only did this once so hope my memory serves me correctly. The clue was
that when you clicked on a link to initiate a call Netmeeting did not
start.

Hope this helps

Hi Andy,
Sorry, but I'm having a difficult time following your explanation because I
don't know all the abbreviations.

Sorry. Open Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer) go to Tool then Folder
Options in the Menu at the top

You will then see 4 tabbed sections, click on File Types and wait for a few
seconds as it updates the list.

Scroll down the list of Registered File Types until you see the

URL Call To Protocol

Note that this shows up under a file extension of N/A make sure you look in
the File Type Column

Highlight the Call to Protocol then click on advanced at the bottom, this
will open another window. Highlight then Action "Open" that is now showing.
Click on Edit and yet another Window will open called "Editing Action fro
type:URL: Call To Protocol.

Copy
rundll32.exe msconf.dll,CallToProtocolHandler %l
then paste this in to the Box marked Application used to perform action.

Click on OK to close down all the boxes and it should work fine.

Bit long winded but what can I say Beta type software with Microsoft
software is not renowned for making things easy :-)

Hope this helps

Andy
