New Notebook --NetMeeting Problem |
|
|
Just got a new Dell notebook, Windows XP Pro. I installed camera and set up
audio etc. When I tried to make my very first connection with a party, I
got a message saying that person cold not be connected or something to that
effect. I made the call from another computer, same Windows XP Pro, same
camera, etc., and was able to make the call.
Other than possible settings problems which I have yet to find, the only
other thing different is that on the one computer I CAN CONNECT, I'm using
Norton Antivirus 2003 and ZoneAlarm 4.something. The new computer has
Norton Internet Security 2005 installed.
Any clues as to what might be the problem?

How were you attempting to make the call (via an ILS, using an IP address
or ?)? It could be a problem at the other end -- depending on where all the
computers in question are from a network point of view, it could be you are
not calling the correct address -- it is hard to know based on the
information you provided.

I don't know if Norton 2005 could be a problem or not (does it have a |
firewall component?) -- can you temporarily disable it?
Usually inability to connect an outgoing call is caused by a
firewall/router at the other end or in incorrect calling address (so you
are not really calling the computer you think you are calling), but it is
possible a local (to the caller) firewall is blocking |

Brian,
Solved! Over the past several years I have become a NetMeeting expert
THANKS TO YOU, so I was stumped for a while. I normally run Norton
Antivirus and ZoneAlarm, but this new notebook from Dell came with a FREE 15
month subscription to Norton Internet Security. Now how can you turn down a
FREE deal? Anyway, I was not familiar with Norton's firewall until I
started looking through it this morning. Somehow, maybe by default, maybe
by me pushing the wrong button, NetMeeting was permanently denied access to
the network. I changed it to always permit access. Problem is solved. I
guess I should have done more investigation before posting.
The plus side to this is that now I know a little about Norton Internet
Security. Also, this gives me but one more opportunity to express my
gratitude to you. Keep up the fine work.
