Hello,
I am running NetMeeting (3.01) on Windows XP Pro. I am
connected to the internet through a Linksys router model
BEFW11S4. I have forwarded ports 1503, 1720 and 1731
(TCP's) and 1024 -65535 UDP. (Does that 'open' them?)
I can get connected to another person, however, no voice
or video comes through. What else do I have to do?
Thanks,
Craig |

Do you have the latest firmware for your router?
I believe that your router may have a built in H.323 proxy( the BEFSR41
does) -- so that forwarding ports is not necessary on outgoing calls ( and
allowing incoming calls by forwarding tcp 1503 1720).
I would remove all port forwarding and try an outgoing call(implying no
built in H.323 proxy). If that is not successful the generally use of the
dmz( with an appropriately configured personal firewall on the dmz machine)
is the recommended strategy.

Brian,
thanks for looking in here, I really messed up on the
Subject line. Actually, I tried an outgoing call and that
person did not recieve that call, however, when he call me
I could recieve the call. I will try several things and
let you know.
Again, thank you the quick response and advice.
Craig
Thanks for the info, I will try what you suggest. I do
have the latest firmware

I presume you are talking about a call initiated by you in Messenger? That
causes in *incoming* NetMeeting call to you - this kind of call (a call
initiated by you in Messenger) will not be possible regardless of what
configuration you try. The only way to have an incoming NM call is to have
the call made directly to the wan IP of the router ( and use the dmz or
forward tcp 1503 and 1720 if you router has an H.323 proxy)

Brian,
Thank you again for the quick response. No, I initiated
the call from NM, using his WAN IP. When that did not
work, he initiated a call to me using my WAN IP. I did
not use the DMZ, however, I did have the ports 1503 and
1720 forwarded. When he opened his ports, I still could
not initiate a call to him.
When he initiated the call we only had data - no sound or
video. He was running his video and could see his
picture, however, I could not see him. We are still
trying to work it out.
I will let you know.

OK -- the fact that he also was behind a router either slipped my mind or
wasn't obvious.

There are two ways to have an audio/video call from behind a NAT router:
1) do nothing -- if your router has a built in H.323 proxy ( most do not)
2) configure your computer as the dmz machine
