Hello all,

My company is currently in the planning stages of moving into a new
building, approximately 200,000 sq feet, warehouse environment. So
far, my basic plan for covering is as follows (broken out by data /
voice):

DATA
----
CENTRAL NETWORK ROOM
Center data center w/servers and core switching equipment - serving
main offices and data ports withing 300ft.

DATA CLUSTER 1 ( < 600FT from Central)
For data clusters (what I am calling small groups of offices/computers)
OUTSIDE 600ft, I am planning on running (2)300ft Cat5e cables
(redundant failover switch ports) from the central data center to a
satellite switch in a wall mounted, lockable half size rack. This rack
(SAT RACK) will contain the switch, patch panels for voice and data,
and a ups.

DATA CLUSTER 2 ( > 600FT from Central)
For data clusters outside of approximately 600ft, same idea as above,
only connecting with fiber, rather than copper.

VOICE
-----
MAIN OFFICES(Surrounding Central Network Room):
Cat5e from Office Wall Jack direct to Central Network Room Cat 5e Patch
Panel (Telecom Rack)

SATELLITE OFFICE CLUSTERS(Outside of ~300 ft of Central Network Room):
Cat5e from Office Wall Jack to Cat 5e Patch Panel in wall mounted rack
(SAT RACK - see above)

This will be patched with 1ft Cat5e Patch Cables to

Cat 5e Patch Panel connected to a Feeder Cable (10?/25/50 Pair) which
runs to Central Network Room Cat 5e Patch Panel (Telecom Rack)

MISC VOICE CONNECTIONS
Home ran singles from Wall Jack to Central Network Room Cat 5e Patch
Panel

I realize there is alot of detail missing here, but I would appreciate
any general advice/feedback on what I have thus far. Recommendations,
etc on something I may have overlooked for those that have done this
before.

A few questions that have come to mind:

1. Cat5e or Cat6 - Is it a must to go with Cat 6? I would assume that
at some point in the future parts if not all of our network will be
gigabit to the desktop - will Cat 5e handle this?

2. Is is pretty standard to run Wall to Satellite Patch, Sat. Patch -
Feeder Cable - Main Patch, Main Patch to Equipment? Our current setup
has an additional 66 block in between in the main room so the feeder
goes to the 66block, then 66block to the Patch, then the Patch to the
equipment - I think this is old school, no?

3. I'm planning on using overhead raceway's in the main room - any
caveats to these? Better suggestions?

TIA For Your Feedback / Comments

Ah yes, I should have added a "MISC DATA CONNECTIONS" in there as we do
have a WiFi infrastructure that will be put in place as well, however
it will not be used as a primary connection method for workstations.
On that note - I was also planning on including a network+telecom drop
every 100 feet or so in areas where there were not office clusters /
immediate data/telecom needs - just in case.

Spec out the locations necessary to give good WiFI coverage over the
entire facility and get CATx wire pulled to those spots even if you
don't put APs there right away. Put APs where the people are right
away.

Don't blame me. I voted for Gore.

I would go with Cat 5e. If all you ever need is file/printer/email

access it will be fine. Cat 6 is a step up but I don't see a need for
it for you. If I was doing the job I'd put in Cat 5e.

Everything else sounds legit...

As far as wireless access. I would probably put in a few drops into
your warehouse just in case if do need wireless access for something out
there.
