It is better to just connect the DSL modem into the phone jack? The
only connectors sent with SBC were the dual plugs with the DSL and
phone plug side by side. Is that necessary? Seems likes it would be a
shorter connection to bypass the filter altogether since no phone is
going to be used next to the modem. Thanks.

You do not need a filter for the DSL modem. But keep one handy where you
can find it if you do want to use a phone/fax there.
