Hi,

In netmeeting I can place a call using the remote party's IP address. Is
there any other way of calling, say in cases where the target does not have
a public IP.

There are other ways of calling -- via an ILS server, via a web based
directory, via some versions of Msn Messenger or other IM programs but all
those required a public IP.

The only strategy that would allow calling a client behind a NAT would be
via a gatekeeper/gateway using a gatekeeper based calling method. This
would require that the other end be running such a device and that they
supply you with the appropriate access information.

When the client is behind a NAT router then the client should be able to
configure the router that incoming calls can be forwarded to the client
(as shown on your site www.meetingbywire.com/Firewalls.htm).

And when the client has access to webspace he can publish the public IP
of his NAT router to his website with this freeware program:

"IPUpdate 2.3" http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/IPUpdate/966579105/1
You can use IPUpdate to update your webpage on an FTP Server that you
have access to. You can also send somebody an Email telling them what
your IP is. But the best part about IPUpdate is that it does it all
automatically and invisibly.
