looking for a way to directly call a computer and initiate a |

Hello all,
I was wondering if it were possible to call another computer using
dialer.exe and then once the computer picks up the line, start
netmeeting and begin a session?
is there an existing process for this task? I wan't to be able to
reach and support users who aren't savvy enough to figure out their ip
address settings etc, or who are behind firewalls using extensive port
forwarding schemes.
any help would be appreciated, |

I am not totally sure what you are asking with regard to dialer but it is
unrelated to NetMeeting. To make a NetMeeting call you must know the IP
address of the target machine either directly or obtain it via an ILS
server.
Another potential option is to call via a gateway/gatekeeper if the target
machine is using such a device

Well the IP address is shown in the help about of NetMeeting so I am not
sure it could be any simpler.

There is nothing that will help you here -- the target machine must somehow
setup to receive the incoming message and audio/video packets (usually port
forwarding of individual ports is *not* an option -- usually use of the dmz
feature of a soho router is required) and you must know the external IP of
the router/firewall.
As I said above though it is possible to use an H.323 gateway/gatekeeper
server to transit NATs and firewalls assuming the network at the other end
is setup with such a device and the user is registered. |

I guess to make what I was thinking more clear was does windows have
the functionality of something like pc anywhere for help desk support?
I am trying to figure a few key ways to connect two computers together
to offer support for a user.
By calling them directly was the last one I was trying to figure out.
I figured out how to do it by ils server which is a shame they
discontinued the ils server concept. (I want to figure out how to set
one up for a private group.)
I had an idea if the netmeeting program was running, you could call
using dialer and maybe enter the computer name or ip address in
netmeeting and make the connection. I'm not sure if any ip addresses
would be established for this type of connection though. |

NetMeeting has such functionality -- called Remote Desktop Sharing. XP also
has a non NetMeeting based Remote Desktop function that has similar
capability.

It wasn't really discontinued (at least not until recently) --Microsoft
just stopped running an ILS service. NetMeeting still supports ILS calling,
an ILS server is including in Win2000 server and there are a number of 3rd
party run services.

You *can* enter the computer name or IP address in NetMeeting and connect
in a call. The problem is that internet clients usually have neither a
fixed name or IP address. That is why an ILS server is used -- to translate
a fixed piece of information ( the ILS server name/user email address) to a
variable piece of information -- the user's IP address in order to make the
call. And of course routers and firewalls make calling difficult (or in
most cases impossible). |

thanks Brian. I guess I'll just have to write some simple instructions
on how to sign in to an ils server over the internet. |
