Brian,

I saw you mention Microsoft Portrait for audio/video
calls. What is Microsoft's plan for data collaborations
(application sharing, desktop sharing, whiteboard etc.)
in future?

I am not privy to Microsoft's planning but I am willing to speculate.

The immediate future for personal audio/video/data calling communication
from Microsoft seems to be MSN Messenger. It supports application
sharing/desktop sharing and whiteboard functions in addition to standard
instant messaging and a bunch of fluff. There is also a product called
Office Communicator (http://www.microsoft.com/office/rtc/client.mspx)that
is a rebranding of Windows Messenger. It has some of the same features but
be aimed at enterprises. It seems the immediate future for multi party data
collaboration(and probably voice and video at some point) is the
LiveMeeting service.

Long term - I don't know. There is a high end (requiring extremely high
bandwidth) tool from Microsoft Research called ConferenceXP (and as you
mention Microsoft Portrait but I doubt it has a future) that is being used
by some in high speed (mostly post secondary school) networks for
audio/video/data collaboration.

There have been rumours off and on about Longhorn(the XP replacement)
features -- but even if they were somehow in the works with the current
move to remove features so that it can be shipped in 2006 I doubt anything
substantially new will appear with it.

Thanks Brian. The conferenceXP looks very interesting. I
will spend some time on it.
