How to do netmeeting in my case? |
|
|
Hello Dear,
I'm using a pc in one intranet in korea, which has its own firewall.
My partner is using a PC in the other intranet in China, which also
has its own firewall.
How can we do netmeeting in this situation?
too distance? too many obstacles?

When you say it has "its own firewall" -- do you mean a local software
firewall or a border firewall or NAT of some kind?
If you want have an audio/video call you will have to modify the firewall
setup at both ends, to allow NetMeeting server or exception privileges if
the firewalls are local personal firewalls or if the firewall is a border
firewall to use the dmz feature ( if a soho NAT), or to use a
gateway/gatekeeper server that would have to run within the firewalls(or
built in gateway in the firewall possibly).
If you just want to do data calls forwarding tcp 1503 at one would be
enough, or calling out to an external callable third party from both ends
(assuming outgoing capability is not blocked by the firewalls).

Thanks for your kind reply.
Then, what about netmeeting server setup?
After we finished setting up the firewall at both ends,
Is it also needed to set up and share the same netmeeting Directory Server
at both ends?
If it is,
Do you know any good recommendable Sever? |

I am not sure what server you are referring to. An ILS server ( used to
assist in initiating calls) will not be usable in a situation where the
called party is behind a firewall or router( and the calling party is not
behind the same firewall).

Again it depends on what "firewall" means but if this is a border firewall
-- the only way to call would be call directly to to the WAN IP of the
router/firewall (which would be configured to forward to the internal
machine).

It would be possible to set up a gateway/gatekeeper server behind the
firewall to forward to (at both ends) and have users register with the
gatekeeper and make and receive gatekeeper routed calls.
http://www.dialupaudio.com has one -- there is an open source one as well
at http://www.openh323.org. My understanding is that some high end routers
/firewalls have built in gateway/gatekeepers but I don't know specific
manufacturers or models.
