Cannot host a meeting using netmeeting |
|
|
I work at an IT department and I have a user that cannot host meeting using
netmeeting ever since his system was upgraded with office 2003. He was able
to use it before the upgrade. His logging into an ILS account.
If someone else hosts the meeting, his fine. He can communicate with anyone,
but his unable to host the meeting. If I try calling him I can see on my end
that the phone is ringing but at his end, you can't see anything or anyone
dialing in. He doesn't a message that someone is calling so that he can
accept the call.
I've gone to the security section and made sure they were set the same as
mine, since I host meeting on my PC. I've also taken his PC to my network
drop and doesn't seem to work either. So we know it's not a firewall issue
or router.
OS: Windows 2000. SP4
Office suite 2003
Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this?
Your help would be greatly appreciated.

I presume you mean he cannot be called? Hosting a meeting has a specific
meaning in NetMeeting -- and is initiated by the "Host Meeting" menu item.

I don't known how Office 2003 could have this effect. Is it possible that a
firewall is now enabled and was not before or that some other change
occured or that IPSec is enabled for NetMeeting ports.

It sounds it could be a local firewall issue? Is there a software firewall
running on the computer
What happens if you try to call him directly at his IP address instead of
via the ILS server -- any change? Is his IP pingable from your machine or
other machines?
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q171648 has
information on using telnet to diagnose connectivity problems -- can you
connect to the problem machine on tcp 1503 or tcp 1720?

I noticed you posted to an XP forum as well ( is that somehow significant)?

I don't either, but he claims that it occurred after the office 2003
install. I know for a fact it's not a firewall, because I connect to the
same port and host a meeting. Haven't checked IPSec yet.

Nope

We've tried using IP and this didn't work either. Yes, it's pingable. As I
mentioned he can join meeting, he just can't host them.

I am not sure what "I connect to the same port and host a meeting" means.

Connecting to the same physical connection ( is that what you mean by the
network "drop"?) is not necessarily guaranteeing similar operation- it
would depend on the network setup and the configuration of machines.

The fact that he can make outgoing connections does not mean anything with
respect to incoming connections.
I would try the telnet testing I suggested to see if it provides any
further clues.

Just FYI.
I've met that.
My solution is re-install msnetmtg.inf and it seems to be fine.
step: search the msnetmtg.inf on %root%\system32, right click and select
"Install"
Have a try and report the result.

RE: Cannot host a meeting using netmeeting |

Robert,
I'm having the exact same problem as the original poster. I uninstalled and
reinstalled netmeeting but I'm still not able to host a "meeting." The first
screen shows that I'm in a call but as soon as I click the Share button the
new panel says I'm not in a call and all of the apps are grayed out.
Any suggestions?

NetMeeting calls are really two calls in parallel - an H.323 audio/video
call and a T.120 data call. One can connect without the other -- and by
design the audio/video part of the call connects first if the call is both
audio/video and data.
So the situation where the call is connected but you cannot start any data
functions can happen in a number of ways:
1) Since the audio/video part of the call connects first there is a time
period ( usually short) after the call connects where data functions will
not function (usually waiting 10 seconds or so is enough).
2) For some reason (this anecdotally seems to happen when one end is a slow
connection like dial up and the other end is faster), it seems the data
part of the connection never happens -- due to some timeout I am guessing.
Reconnecting the call but setting the video not to start automatically on
connection seems to help in these situations.
3) Some types of calls -- those forced to be audio/video only by the caller
or placed through an H.323 gateway/gatekeeper will not have data functions
enabled.
4) It is possible to all disable data functions with group policy. If one
end or the other has group policy settings like this no data call will
connect.
5) If one side or the other has something blocking tcp 1503 (used by the
T.120 data protocol) no data functions will be available.
I don't know if any of these are possible in your situation. |
