sb5120 vs sb5100 |

I noticed that the current "on the shelf" Motorola modem is the sb5100 and
my ISP has the sb5120. The little bit I could find about the difference is
that a different chipset is used in the sb5120. Is the sb5120 an actual
replacement for the sb5100 or maybe just a lower cost unit made for the
ISPs? If buying a new modem would there be any advantage getting the sb5120? |

In addition to the SB5100, Motorola has docs on SB5101, SB5101E (Euro)
and SB5120. Only the 5100 is listed as a product though which implies
to me that the others are for ISPs only and may have some software or
minor hardware mods to aid the ISPs or some such.
Only differences I could see in the docs:
SB5120 supports 32 users in one place and 63 in another
SB5100 supports 63 users
SB5101 supports 63 users
The 5120 user guide says 5100 inside with no ref to 5120 which leads
one to beelieve they should be interchangeable. |

the difference is the chipset. the 5100 uses broadcom while the 512 |
uses texas instruments. between the two, the 5120 is better..

FYI, when I traded in my ancient SB3100 to Comcast, they gave me the 5120.
Plugged it in, turned it on, got it provisioned and I immediately went from
3000Mbs to 5400Mbs

I'm still using the ancient SB3100 that Comcast gave me when I started
the service with them in early 2001. My service level was just
upgraded to 6Mbps for the standard tier, but the best I've seen so far
is 5.5Mbps. I think I'm probably pushing the upper limits of this
modem, even though Comcast says it should be good for up to 6.3Mbps.
