Netmeeting and XP2 |
|
|
I can successfully have netmeeting running, hosting on a dial up line with
XP sp1 and being called by XP SP2 behind router and with windows firewall
turned on on the sp2 pc. can use whiteboard, share programs etc...
When I reverse the situation with sp2 pc doing the dialup the sp1 pc behind
the router appears in the name list window of netmeeting on both pcs but
message
waiting for response from host (sp2 pc)
appears and stays for some 20 seconds before going away.
Tried with firewall turned off and running zonealarm but still no joy. I am
quite puzzled by this. I have conf as part of the exception regime of the
firewall, am I missing something obvious.

Hmm- it would seem prudent to update that SP1 system (an aside though
probably not related to your problem)

I can't think of anything obvious. If sounds like a firewall related issue.
When you talk about the firewall turn off -- which one(s) are you talking
about? SP1 has a firewall (off by default), SP2 has a different firewall
(on by default). When you get the failure -- are all firewalls off?

I have tried with sp2 pc fw on, zonealarm off
sp2 firewall off zonealarm on
sp2 firewall off zonealarm off
where sp2 pc is hosting meeting via dial up
though sp1 zonealarm on all the time
An interesting aside a colleague had the same problem with sp2 hosting via
dialup took sp2 off and back to sp1 and all works fine. Also those calling
in to her were all from dialups using win98.

Don't know what the problem is - may be related to some sort of problem
with Zone Alarm and SP2 firewall interacting.
All I can suggest is to uninstall Zone Alarm, set up the SP2 firewall off
or NetMeeting set as an exception.

Don't know what the issue might be -- I can't think of any specific change
between SP1 and 2 that might have the effect you are seeing, though I
haven't actually used dial up in a long time to say whether your problem
can be duplicated.
Anybody out there using SP2/NetMeeting and dialup with success?

I had another go at this problem, and thought why not look at the firewall
logs they might provide a clue.
Anyway went to dial up and noticed I couldnt, modem was there, driver gone,
so added hardware again selected one of the xp generiic 56 drivers and modem
insatlled, dialled up ok, started nm setup host meeting, windows firewall on
as left last time I tried and failed, this time called sp2 pc from sp1 pc on
my network and estabished a nm session, so now it works.
I then disabled windows firewall reinstalled zonealarm and tried nm again
and it worked. The only thing (a dangerous thing to say) that I changed was
the modem which wasnt there anymore, now I don't believe that would cause
the malfunction of nm.The other thing which is possible is that the version
of zonealarm running whne I was having problems was late 2004, and the one
now installed is march 2005.

So -- it still seems a mystery -- glad you have it working though.
