I remember that I have disabled many services with a script file from
www.ntsvcfg.de/ntsvcfg_eng.html (I think this site is temporaly down,
but can found with keyword "ntsvcfg_eng" in google cache)

You may have found the root of your problem -- find out what you
disabled and reenable. Most of this disable service advice is poorly
researched and just plain wrong.

I don't think so that this hints a wrong. They are good decrypted. The
only think could happen that I have disabled too many services.
Microsoft has enabled many services which for the "normal" user are not
necessary. I also see a 2003 Server installation where many services
were disabled.

Would you go to your car engine, remove a whole bunch of
wires and belts just because a website told you to?

I would do it - when the website is discussed by many other people and
no one has arguments against it. By the mentioned internet site I only
see comments like: "You do not need any software firewall when you
have no service to serve a port".

Hm, isn't "Microsoft Portrait" a replacement ?

No -- not in my mind -- Portrait is not a product but a Microsoft
Research project. I have not heard of any plans to turn it into a
project (and it has been around for a number of years).

But is Netmeeting developed in the future ? You wrote some mails befor:

Quote:
The last version of NetMeeting was released in 1999 and Microsoft has
announced its retirement -- it will be in no future operating
systems.

And the last Portrait version is from July 2004 ...

And here your wrote from "current", "future" and "your guess"
(no contradiction):

That said though it (Netmeeting) is shipped on all current Windows
operating systems,

Microsoft has announced its (Netmeeting) retirement -- it will be in
no future operating systems.

NetMeeting users will continue to drop off over time until it dies
completely.

My guess is that it (Portrait) will not run/be available on the next
version of Microsoft operating system just like NetMeeting.

When I see that "MS Word 97" (from 1997 ?) runs with Windows XP very
well - why should Portrait (from 2004) not run under future Windows
versions ?

And the video is useful? I think that is more of toy (and even
NetMeeting and Messenger video are just upgraded toys from a video
point of view). Working "video phones" have been around since the
60's and unfortunately have not progressed much.

I think the more it becomes available for "normal" people the more
it becomes interesting. My friend has a brother in Papua New Guinea and
for him it was nice not only to hear his voice, but also can see him
(last weekend: Easter greetings).

I am not sure Word 97 runs well on any operating system but I will accept
your observation as true. ;-)

Well as I said it is my opinion only -- I haven't tested to see if current
Longhorn builds support Portrait but some of the earlier ones had
NetMeeting included as well so it is possible that both NetMeeting and
Portrait will be usable.

Portrait has been around for a long time (not as long as NetMeeting though)
and no effort has been made as far as I know to include it in any
product(product inclusion is usually a sign that it has a future).

In some ways that is part of the problem. If real time internet video
calling was worth more for businesses or was cheaper to do effectively it
would be more developed as there would be commercial incentive to do so.

Businesses can (an do) use real time internet audio/data sharing functions
so most of the commercial push and development seems to be placed there.
