WhyWouldAnyoneSillNeedNetmeeting?WhenMSNMessengerHasTheVideoIMing...

....feature (along with the typing-IM feature, all in ONE program)? Whereas
with Netmeeting I would assume you would need--still--Windows Messenger 5.0.
One integrated program versus 2?!! Are there things I overlooked? Looking for
enlightenment and mucho gracias

Did you know that some Messenger features are provided by NetMeeting
(whiteboard and application sharing for instance)

NetMeeting allows more than two parties in a session with Whiteboard and
Application sharing.

NetMeeting has a remote control feature -- Messenger does not.

NetMeeting has a SDK that exposes key features for development, Messenger
does not.

NetMeeting supports direct to IP calling, Messenger needs a server to
initiate a connection.

NetMeeting supports encrypted data connections -- Messenger does not.

NetMeeting supports audio/video calling on previous (to XP) platforms,
Messenger does not.

There are some areas where Messenger is better as well -- integrated IM,
NAT traversal, better audio fidelity are some that come to mind.

Regardless though Microsoft has chosen to retire NetMeeting --it will not
be included in the next version of Windows ( Longhorn) barring some massive
change of mind. I am guessing that many users though will cling to it till
the very end.

Thanks for the Speddy Gonzalez response, Brian (wow, that's what you call
service!)

So if we could simpify/summarize your responses, does Netmeeting facilitate
the enterprise environment, whereas MSN Messenger for personal communications
like family & friends? (Just Gave your response a quick onceover, will
distill them more later and assess significances.) But unti the, I am correct
in saying that one would still need to have Windows Messenger 5.0 installed
after/along with Netmeeting?

Just FYI, I don't have a job where would require Netmeeting extended
supported features (assuming what I assumed cause have not dissected your
response)...and another reason that spurred me to uninstallED Windows
Messenger 4.7 and installed MSN Messenger BETAv7.0 (search all my posts
"leechget") was because I was reading at some Microsoft's link that Windows
Messenger Add-Ins NO longer supported and suggested installing MSN Messenger
(did I make a mistake here?)

Could it be possible some future version of MSN Messenger supports the
extended features you mentioned? (hint, hint)

I am not sure I would characterize it that way (and there is Windows
Messenger -- which is supposed to be enterprise oriented) but there is some
of that ( enterprise vs. personal).

To assume that Microsoft has a lucid understandable strategy in all this is
perhaps not a good assumption
(http://radio.weblogs.com/0127028/stories/2003/08/23/aShortHistoryOfMicrosoftAndIpBasedVideoCalling.html
has a short piece I wrote in a fit of frustration a while ago).

Current Microsoft movements may not any more focused from what I can tell
(http://radio.weblogs.com/0127028/2005/03/09.html for some information
about recent developments) but perhaps they are getting control over the
situation. At least they seem to have realized that having two products
with nearly the same name and similar functions from two apparently
competing divisions is probably not a good idea.

I am not sure about need -- NetMeeting does not need Messenger ( Messenger
however needs NetMeeting at least on XP to provide some of its features)

I don't know -- what are you attempting to do? -- Windows Messenger and Msn
Messenger are separate products. The can coexist on the same machine.

Which ones? It seems Microsoft is spreading features between Msn Messenger,
LiveMeeting and Windows Messenger (to be called Microsoft Office
Communicator 2005 apparently when ready for release).

I can't see that there will be one product that will have all the features
of NetMeeting (not that there necessarily should be). One thing though that
is true is the Microsoft will drop NetMeeting (again not necessarily bad --
it is a bit long in the tooth).
