Good. Maybe that means we might get some more nortel *data* networking
visible here, instead of it being swaped by the voice side...

this group was started as voice group, not a networking group.

Perhaps it's just me being overly optimistic then, based on the fact
it's got dcom (as in datacomms) in the name.

Ho hum.

Bugs me to. I would have thought this group is in the wrong hierarchy.
But I actually took the time to go to ISC and look up the charter, and
lo and behold-

Quote:
This group would encourage posting of material relating to the
installation, administration, maintenance and new technologies
relevant in the Nortel line of business telecommunications
equipment. Posts might include questions and answers about system
programming, hardware setup, product capabilities, sources for
third party add-ons, vendor recommendations, user group meetings,
product bulletins, and similar posts. The group would be
unmoderated. Suppliers, as well as end-users of the equipment
would be invited, as this would offer the widest range of talent
and information for the reader. Binaries, spam, scams, flames,
libel, etc. would be discouraged and should not be posted in this
newsgroup. Unsolicited advertising is discouraged and should not
be posted to this group.

Yes, we have a telecom group stuck in the dcom hierarchy.
But then explain alt.dcom.telecom. Seems to be standard. Go figure.
In the meantime, most of the nortel datacom stuff can be discussed on
the bay networks group. (alt.dcom.sys.bay-networks)

Nortel accounts for the lion's share of the existing/installed legacy
systems in the USA but ranks in the bottom one fourth of new systems
sales. The downturn in the economy following 9-11 didn't help. Most folks
looking to replace an aging system or start from scratch in a new office
today are looking at VOIP. Compared to its competitors, Nortel's IP
offering is (IMO) kind of 'ho-hum'

By the same token, I've been told that many of Nortel's established
service shops & independents are deeply entrenched in the TDM
technologies, some figuring they'll have work forever and have been slow
or unwilling to embrace VOIP. These folks are destined to be looking for
work more sooner than later if attitudes don't change. The longer you
wait, the steeper the learning curve.

Age: 58
With no prior "IP networking experience" I was recently certified on the
Mitel 3300 and SX 200 ICP platforms. (both VOIP systems). Trust me, if I
can do it at my age, anyone can.

Ah, thankyou for that, I must have overlooked that group when I
originally checked (or perhaps my server doesn't carry it), cos I'm one
of those who still tend to slip and call stuff 'Bay' rather than
'Nortel' a lot of the time :-)

Hell, I have a tendency to slip and call my routers 'Wellfleet'. :-)

This group was started as a Nortel telecommunications system group - and
even at the time I proposed it, NT was selling data equipment - and
often calling it by telecommunications equipment.

And now it is even more clear that both the name and heirarchy are
correct with voice and data wallowing through the the same network more
and more.

Add on to that, "Nortel Networks" will be re-branded back to "Nortel" in
the coming year.

There are those of us who rember floppy drives in access node and concentrator
node Wellfleet routers. How about Lattisnet s/w for Synoptics stuff.

Don't laugh, last I heard, at least some AFNs with floppy are running
still today and of course, 2813, and 3000/5000 :-)
