Exchanging Centillions against Baystacks |
|
|
Hello everyone,
my boss gave me the task to write a proposal about exchanging our current
switch infrastructure (Centillions) against a new one (Baystack 470s).
We got seven floors.
Right now every floor has got a Centillion 100 with some Ethernet cards (to
end user) and one ATM 155 card. This ATM card is connected by fiber to a
Centillion 1400 in the serverroom. The 1400 is then connected again to an
MDF 5000 by fiber. From the 5000 we go to the servers.
All this stuff should be exchanged. (reason is saving maintenance costs)
I need a Baystack 470-48T on each floor (makes six) and two 470-48Ts in the
serverroom (the seventh floor) .
A 470 got two build-in GBICs.
Assuming I will use only one GBIC on each floor (I can use the fiber already
leading to the serverroom, right?) I will have six fiber cables ending in
the serverrom from several floors.
In the serverroom I will have got only two Centillion 470s with two GBICs
each, makes 4 in total. So I need something like a concentrator where I can
plug in the fiber from the different floors and the fiber from the 2
Baystack 470s in the serverroom.
What product would you recommend ?
I don't think I can reuse the Cent 1400 as it is an ATM switch, right?
As you see I don't have much experience with that stuff but am very
interested in it.
Thanks for quick answer.

What kind of fiber(MM/SM)? |
Caveat #1 Each Fiber GBIC port you use is one less port for TX(port
47&48).
Why don't you replace the Centillion 1400 with aPassport 8000 series
switch?
You have your choice of Tx,MM,SM blades and switching/routing
capabilities.PLUS
future expansion. Yes,I know MONEY is the problem. But as the old
commercial says "pay me now,pay me later". |

Actually, you're right.
If a use a Passport 8000 series, put in a GBIC blade (which has 8 GBIC ports
if I'm not mistaken) put in two 48port 10/100 and I'm good.
What's the cheapes modell of the 8000 series?
The fiber is MultiMode. Can I use it with the GBIC ports? |

Well, you could go with the 8003 chassis. If you do not need to route, |
you could put 8100 series blades in it, which are cheaper than the 8600
blades.
If you can pony up the cash, go with the 8600 blades. However, with the
8003 chassis, one slot is used for the switch fabric. That leaves one
slot for your 8 port GBIC blade and one slot for your 48 port 10/100
blade. Next up model would be the 8006, then the 8010. In my opinion,
the 48 port 10/100 is not worth the money unless you plan on using
greater than 50% of the ports. If I had to get the most flexibility out
of a Passport 8003 chassis, I would put (2) 8608GBE blades in it. That
would give you the ability to connect to 16 different switches (or
stacks of switches) via GigE, and fewer if you want to do any kind of
link bonding. With the stacking ability of Nortel's Baystack line, you
can connect hundreds of hosts all routed through a single 3 slot
Passport chassis. And hey, if you get ATM blades for the Passport to
make for an easier migration. That would increase your cost a lot though.
Just my 2 cents.

How about using a Passport 1600 Routing Switch instead of an 8000 series
chassis to concentrate the fiber? You could get either 12 (1612G) or 24
(1624G) SFP (Small Form Pluggable) GBIC ports and connect all of the fiber
returning from the Baystack 470s to that. In addition you could trunk the
GBIC ports from the 470s in the server room to the 1600 and get more
bandwidth for your server switches on to the backbone. It might be a less
expensive solution. I work for a large suburban school district. A few other
districts in my region are using this solution and seem to be happy with it.

MM fiber is fine. |
There is a 3 slot;6 slot;and a 10 slot 8000 series switch.
The other suggestion will work fine;I'm not too familiar with that
switch.
I suggested 8000 series because it sounded as if you were replacing
core device(s)I believe there is a mini-Gbic blade available/coming
soon so you can get more bang for the buck, plus consider mlt to the
470's. |

Thanks guys, you already brought some light into the darkness.
As I said i'm not familier with optical fiber and I don't have any paper
about our current fiber and connectors I still don't know exactly what kind
of jack I have at the end of my fiber cables. Is there a website showing
images of connectors which can help me identifying what type I have?
Assuming I have the wrong jacks for some kind of switch does something like
an adapter exist or do I need to call a tech then and let him exchange the
jacks at the end of the fiber?

OK, I'm pretty sure now I got Square Connectors SC at the end of my fiber on
all floors.
The 1600 has SFP Small form pluggable GBICs. Can I connect those?
For the 470-48T I need to by the GBICs extra, right? I've read, GBICs use SC
connectors anyway.

the serverrom from several floors.
In the serverroom I will have got only two Centillion 470s with two GBICs
each, makes 4 in total. So I need something like a concentrator where I
can
plug in the fiber from the different floors and the fiber from the 2
Baystack 470s in the serverroom.
What product would you recommend ?
I don't think I can reuse the Cent 1400 as it is an ATM switch, right?
As you see I don't have much experience with that stuff but am very
interested in it.
Thanks for quick answer.

Most of the optics you buy today with use one of the three fiber |
connector types: LC, SC, or MTRJ.
I would recommend checking out:
http://www.corningcablesystems.com/web/library/library.nsf/ehtml/prodtype
That page might help you find the right type of fiber connectors that
you are looking for.

You shouldn't have a problem. The SFP GBIC that plugs in to that switch can
have either an MT-RJ or LC Connector. You will have to order duplex patch
cables that have an MT-RJ or LC connector on one end and SC Connectors on
the other end.
How do you tell what you have?
SC Connectors are square and there is on for each fiber strand - each fiber
run will have two at each end.
MT-RJ are square, but have both strands in a single connector.
LC are small, look rounded and have both strands in one connector.
I use the MT-RJ 1000BaseSX SFP GBICs for my Nortel stuff.
There is a company called Fiber Instrument Sales that has really good
information about fiber types and connectors on their web site. Search for
them on Google.

on all floors.
The 1600 has SFP Small form pluggable GBICs. Can I connect those?
For the 470-48T I need to by the GBICs extra, right? I've read, GBICs use
SC connectors anyway.

Actually that was what I was seaching all the time.
Great.
I got maybe 150-200 network devices spread over all floors so I don't
think I need something huge like a Passport 8600!?
Any idea what a 1600 cost? For the 470-48T I heard something about
2,500Euros- 2,200$.

How about using a Passport 1600 Routing Switch instead of an 8000 series
chassis to concentrate the fiber? You could get either 12 (1612G) or 24
(1624G) SFP (Small Form Pluggable) GBIC ports and connect all of the
fiber returning from the Baystack 470s to that. In addition you could
trunk the GBIC ports from the 470s in the server room to the 1600 and
get more bandwidth for your server switches on to the backbone. It might
be a less expensive solution. I work for a large suburban school
district. A few other districts in my region are using this solution and
seem to be happy with it.

Hello everyone,
my boss gave me the task to write a proposal about exchanging our
current
switch infrastructure (Centillions) against a new one (Baystack 470s).
We got seven floors.
Right now every floor has got a Centillion 100 with some Ethernet cards
(to
end user) and one ATM 155 card. This ATM card is connected by fiber to
a
Centillion 1400 in the serverroom. The 1400 is then connected again to
an
MDF 5000 by fiber. From the 5000 we go to the servers.
All this stuff should be exchanged. (reason is saving maintenance
costs)
I need a Baystack 470-48T on each floor (makes six) and two 470-48Ts in
the
serverroom (the seventh floor) .
A 470 got two build-in GBICs.
Assuming I will use only one GBIC on each floor (I can use the fiber
already
leading to the serverroom, right?) I will have six fiber cables ending
in
the serverrom from several floors.
In the serverroom I will have got only two Centillion 470s with two

Thanks guys, you already brought some light into the darkness.
As I said i'm not familier with optical fiber and I don't have any paper
about our current fiber and connectors I still don't know exactly what kind
of jack I have at the end of my fiber cables. Is there a website showing
images of connectors which can help me identifying what type I have?
Assuming I have the wrong jacks for some kind of switch does something like
an adapter exist or do I need to call a tech then and let him exchange the
jacks at the end of the fiber?

Here is a picture of common and not-so-common connectors:

You may also want to look into BayStack 5510-48T. Those switches do
10/100/1000 and could be useful for your server connections. |
