First Attempt "Not Found", Second always works...?? |
|
|
This happens when I'm accessing web pages, news servers, and mail servers.
Doesn't happen all the time, but maybe 1 in 5 times.
I click, get "...not found...", immediately click again, and whatever I'm trying
to get to is found.
Covad DSL, Windows 2000 Pro.
Any thoughts?

The DNS server is taking longer to respond than the timeout used by
your browser or your resolver library. |

Per Neil W Rickert:

Thanks.
Sounds like I sb changing something...but what?
Can't find anything in IE6's Tools|Internet Options.
I see an "Idle Time" in Covad's proprietary connection manager, but nothing
else.
Maybe some kind of registry setting?

Maybe your connection is messed up so that the first time thru it fiddles
around but once connected it is solid. You might try the ISP's tech support(?)

Suspect a DNS problem, either server (do you have backup DNS servers
listed? Check IPCONFIG, add your ISP's backup DNS IP) or timeout (check
in browser settings, usually 120-150 seconds). Are you running a local
DNS cache? (check timeout, flush that cache and restart). |
